I started working on repairing Sarah's laptop last night. Well, I took it apart a few days ago in order to extricate the hard drive (shit design, if you ask me. Remove entire bottom panel in order to access any internals) but I only just got around to formatting it and running diagnostics. I also installed Ubuntu. Mostly because I'm not putting an illegal copy of Windows Vista on someone else's computer, and I don't have the original installation CD for Windows 7. Really, Windows 7 is probably why this computer crashed anyway. The hardware seems way too fragile to support anything as complicated and resource-hungry as Windows 7/8. I still want to run a few more tests on the HDD before saying for sure that it's good to go, namely a BIOS system check and an Ubuntu Disk Check. I also want to download a HDD health monitoring app and let it run for a day or two, see what happens.
