About

Oracle VM VirtualBox is a free and open-source hosted hypervisor for x86 computers currently being developed by Oracle Corporation. Developed initially by Innotek GmbH, it was acquired by Sun Microsystems in 2008 which was in turn acquired by Oracle in 2010.

I think I'll try installing this on HOMECOMP when I install Ubuntu on it after Windows ends support for Windows7.

Appliances

This should include any info about the various Virtual Box appliances and such that I plan to have running on HOMECOMP.

Can appliances be run remotely from a server (ie HOMESERV)?

To Install

  • SteamOS
  • AndroidOS
  • ChromeOS
  • ChromiumOS
  • DeepinOS
  • KaliLinux
  • OpenMediaVault
  • RecalBox
  • TailsSuite
  • Ubuntu
  • Windows10
  • Windows7
  • Windows8
  • WindowsXP (for vulnerability testing)

Installed

Remote Access

In order to access the VirtualBox guests from another PC in the HomeNetwork, it is necessary to have "Advanced Configuration" set to ON in OpenMediaVault. This allows the user to change the automatically assigned IP of the guest. The guest IP should be set to 10.0.0.91 under "Network" in VirtualBox. The ports can be left as-is. The guest OperatingSystem can be started and in the VirtualBox details page, under "Network", clicking the link for the port number assigned to the guest will download a remote desktop shortcut. By double-clicking this shortcut, a remote session is started.

Troubleshooting

Editing RDP Files

Apparently it is possible to edit RDP files by right clicking the file and selecting Edit. The Edit window has 5 tabs: General, Display, Local Resources, Experience, and Advanced.

General: Allows you to set the username to log in with and whether credentials should be required or not. You can also save all settings from this tab.

Display: From this tab you can choose the size of the screen and whether or not all monitors should be used. You can also choose the color quality setting and whether or not the connection bar should be displayed when in full screen mode.

Local Resources: From this tab you can configure remote audio and keyboard setting, as well as choose what local devices and resources are available to the remote.

Experience: This tab allows you to choose your connection speed and allow or disallow a number of visual features.

Advanced: I'm not really sure about the settings in the Advanced tab.
